REME Sailing - 2026The REME Sailing Club exists to provide opportunities for the REME Family to experience and participate in sailing across the disciplines of Offshore, Dinghy, Windsurfing and Kitesurfing. Generously supported by the REME Charity, the Club has some excellent facilities and equipment to help deliver on its aim, including two Hallbery Rassey yachts and an excellent dinghy centre at South Cerney (approximately 20 mins from Lyneham). We have developed a strong cadre of instructors to enhance and develop new sailors, and all instruction is completed under the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) framework for teaching. The Club has ambitious plans for 2026 which you can read about below. Highlights will again be the Keelboat Regatta at Seaview Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight, this year held on 10 Jun 26, and the Dinghy Regatta held on 24 and 25 Jun 26 at South Cerney. Offshore 2025 was a great year for REME offshore sailing with more soldiers and officers on the water than ever. REME won the Army Offshore Regatta for the third year in a row and ran the first REME sailing AT expedition for some years. 2026 will build on this with hopes of retaining the title at the Army Offshore Regatta over 12-16 May 26, while also competing on the civilian offshore circuit. Ex SEAHORSE EXPLORER will return giving REME soldiers the opportunity to conduct sailing AT over legs to Plymouth and the Channel Islands. Dinghy The 2026 season began with the annual Open Day at South Cerney on 15 Apr 26. Run each year, this is an opportunity to come and see the excellent REME facilities at South Cerney Sailing Club and have a go at dinghy sailing - no experience needed. Returning sailors were also welcomed with refresher training on offer to help get back into the swing of things. For those keen to learn more and get a formal RYA qualification, we will be running a Level 2 Start Sailing course at South Cerney 27 Apr - 01 May 26 and places are still available so get in touch ASAP. Instructor supported Wednesday afternoon sailing will take place at South Cerney over the summer months starting 13 May 26 with individuals and units welcome to join during their sports afternoons. This will be excellent preparation for the REME Dinghy Regatta which will be held at South Cerney over 24-25 Jun 26 as part of the Festival of Sport. The Dinghy team will also be looking to address a poor run of form in the Inter-Corps Competition which will be held at Thorney Island 6-9 Oct 26. Windsurf Recent enhancements to the centre at South Cerney have seen the addition of windsurfing equipment and we are now able to offer windsurf taster sessions and deliver RYA windsurf courses. Kitesurf The kitesurf team will compete in the Army and Inter-Service Championships in 2026. These events are open to all level of competitor with new kitesurfers particularly welcomed. The Army will also run an overseas training camp in Sicily in May. Again open to all, this will be a great opportunity to develop kitesurf skills. Families Each summer REME Sailing runs a dinghy sailing course for REME families where we teach RYA youth and adult sailing courses. The course dates this year will be Monday 27 Jul to Friday 31 Jul 26. The course will follow the RYA sailing scheme which teaches the skills, knowledge, and training for effective sailing. No prior sailing experience is necessary to attend but there is a minimum age of 8 years old. There is also opportunity for adults to learn to sail to enable sailing as a family group. Camping will be available at the sailing club for the week. Summary Please make the most of the opportunities to get involved in one of the many REME sailing events this year; these are delivered for you and despite the busy commitments we face as a Corps, I encourage you to make the effort to come along - I promise you will enjoy it and the time away from the stresses of the daily routine will be invaluable.
